Post and Beam

The general public doesn’t always understand the definition of Post and beam construction but as the popularity for more open/dramatic spaces has grown so does the interest in this exquisite technique of construction. Post and Beam is a building method that relies on heavy timbers rather than dimensional lumber.  The use of large sturdy timbers in post and beam construction means fewer support beams are needed, thus creating these dramatically open interior spaces. Timber Barns can be either Post and Beam or Timber Frame structures. Post and Beam typically uses half lap joinery with hidden fasteners, and sometimes decorative metal braces; whereas Timber Frame uses mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs.
